How to Handle Common Dental Problems Until
You come to See Us
Dental emergencies can vary greatly, but the sooner you seek help, the better the chances of saving your tooth and reducing discomfort. Here are some of the most common emergencies we treat and what you can do before you reach our office.
✅ Toothache
- What to do: Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean it. If swelling occurs, apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth, which can burn the gum tissue.
- Why it matters: Toothaches can result from cavities, infection, or gum disease, so early treatment is important to prevent more serious issues.
✅ Knocked-Out Tooth
- What to do: Retrieve the tooth by the crown (not the root), and rinse it gently with water. Try to place the tooth back in the socket if possible. If not, place the tooth in a container with milk or saline solution to preserve it.
- Why it matters: The sooner you act, the higher the chances of saving the tooth. Call our office immediately to schedule an emergency appointment.
✅ Cracked or Broken Tooth
- What to do: Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. If there is swelling, apply a cold compress. Avoid chewing on the affected side to prevent further damage.
- Why it matters: Cracked teeth can be painful and may lead to more extensive damage if not treated quickly.
✅ Lost Filling or Crown
- What to do: If you lose a filling, use dental wax or a piece of sugar-free gum to cover the exposed area. For a lost crown, try to place it back on the tooth using dental cement or a temporary dental adhesive until you can get to our office.
- Why it matters: Without the proper protection, the affected tooth may become more vulnerable to further damage or infection.
✅ Abscessed Tooth
- What to do: An abscess is a serious infection that requires immediate attention. Rinse with warm salt water to alleviate discomfort, but avoid popping the abscess.
- Why it matters: An untreated abscess can spread infection and damage the surrounding tissues, so urgent care is crucial.
✅ Chipped or Broken Tooth
- What to do: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any tooth pieces and bring them with you to your appointment.
- Why it matters: Even a minor chip can lead to bigger problems if left untreated. It’s best to get it looked at immediately to prevent further damage.
